My “Jackson Five” Approach to Copywriting
My approach to copywriting is simple:
Make it easy.
Not clever. Not complicated. Not “impressive.”
Easy.
Because if people don’t understand what you’re saying…
you can’t sell them anything.
I call this my “Jackson Five” approach
to copywriting—borrowed from the classic song by The Jackson 5:
“ABC… easy as 1-2-3.”
There’s a reason that line has stuck in people’s heads for decades.
It’s built on something fundamental:
People remember things in threes.
Simple patterns. Familiar structure. Instant clarity.
That’s exactly how your copy
should work.
When someone reads your message, they shouldn’t have to stop and figure it out. They shouldn’t have to reread a sentence. They shouldn’t feel confused, overwhelmed, or lost.
Because the moment confusion enters…
The sale exits.
Great copy removes friction.
- It guides.
- It simplifies.
- It makes the next step obvious.
So when I
write—or teach copywriting—I’m always asking:
Can this be said more simply?
Can this be broken into three parts?
Can this be understood instantly?
If the answer is no, it gets rewritten.
Because in the end, the goal isn’t to sound smart.
The goal is to be understood.
And when you’re understood…
That’s when you get paid.
All good
wishes,
DD
