The ONE Skill That Turns YOU Into a Copywriting Legend
I'm learning to speak Italian for an upcoming trip. People say many Italians speak English. In reality, many don’t.
And for me, speaking the language of the country I’m visiting makes the entire experience richer. Not just asking for two extra towels… but being able to actually connect with someone in their own language.
I learned Spanish years ago for a different reason: I figured the person pushing my wheelchair one day wouldn’t be speaking English. So Spanish it was.
I learned it by running in the mornings with the Pimsleur listen-and-speak program for two years. And now I’m doing the same thing with Italian.
But this letter isn’t really about learning languages.
It’s about something far more important: understanding the way YOU learn.
Because once you truly figure that out, there is nothing you can’t master.
I learn by practicing over and over until the patterns burn into my mind.
That's how I learned copywriting too. I didn’t just read great copy—I
emulated it. I didn’t just copy words; I studied transitions, argument structure, connective tissue… the pieces that turn a simple idea into something hypnotic.
So when I wrote “The Great Retirement Betrayal” in 1992, the editor of Who’s Mailing What thought Gary Bencivenga had written it.
That didn’t happen by accident.
I didn’t hand-copy the greats—I reverse-engineered them. I explored the machinery beneath the sentences. And I practiced until those structures were permanently etched in my mind.
Which brings me to something every copywriter is dealing with today:
ChatGPT.
Sure, it can help you produce copy without much skill. Anyone can ask it to write a headline.
But it cannot install in your brain the mind’s eye that sees the avaiable means of persuasion. It cannot train you to perceive the available arguments in every selling
situation…
or to make those arguments airtight…or to turn them into copy that makes a prospect—as my mentor Richard Stanton-Jones would say—“do a swan dive to the order form.”
The bottom line here is this: AI will bury the writers who never learn how to think.
But it will massively
amplify the writers who do.
And that’s why YOU must understand how YOU learn.
Because once you do, every tool—including AI—becomes a force
multiplier instead of a crutch.
That, my friend, is what turns you into a copywriting legend.
All good wishes,
Doug
P.S.
If you’ve read this
far, we see the world the same way. The most important breakthrough I ever had was understanding how I learn—and once I figured that out, nothing was off-limits: languages, copywriting… anything.
