Investing in Experiences: Why Moments Matter More Than Things
There’s a certain
magic in experiences that material possessions can never replicate. I’ve spent my life chasing moments—ones that make my heart race, my mind expand, and my soul feel alive.
From exploring
foreign streets to crossing finish lines, from savoring unforgettable meals to coaching others to their own breakthroughs,
I’ve learned one
truth: investing in experiences is the richest currency we have. Let me take you through some of the moments that have shaped me and why I believe they’re worth more than anything you can buy.
The Thrill of the Journey
Traveling has been
one of my greatest teachers. I’ll never forget the student tour of Paris as the non-responsibility chaperone—the city of light dazzling me with its charm.
Strolling along the
Seine, munching on a warm croissant, and staring up at the Eiffel Tower felt like stepping into a painting, all without the burden of keeping anyone in line. That trip taught me curiosity and wonder, lessons that linger far beyond the classroom.
Then there was
England with my family. Driving through the rolling countryside, exploring ancient castles, and laughing over fish and chips in a cozy pub brought us closer together. Those days weren’t just vacations—they were bonds forged in shared adventure, memories I revisit every time I hear a British accent.
Running has been my
escape. Completing four marathons wasn’t just about the medals (though they’re pretty cool). It was about the grind, the early mornings, and the quiet victories over doubt. Each race was a testament to what I could push myself to do—a reward no paycheck can match.
Who can forget the
breakfasts at Nini’s restaurant after each Saturday morning run with friends? I’ll never forget the laughs with friends or my boys savoring their hot chocolate with whipped cream piled 4" high, drizzled with chocolate syrup on top!
The Unreplaceable Wins
Some experiences
stand out for what they represent. Winning three world masters titles in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)—plus the coveted Mundial title in Brazil—was one of those peaks. Stepping onto the mat in Rio, the air thick with tension, and walking away with gold was surreal.
It wasn’t just about
the wins; it was the years of training, the taps, the sweat-soaked gis, and the brotherhood of the sport. BJJ in Brazil taught me grit, focus, and the thrill of chasing mastery.
Las Vegas brought a
different kind of competition. The bright lights, the roaring crowds—I went there to test myself, to see how I’d stack up under pressure. Whether it was a race or a fight, those Vegas nights were electric, pushing me to dig deeper and come out stronger--medaling eight times!
Building a business
from scratch was another triumph—one that unfolded over late nights, bold leaps, and hard-earned lessons. There’s nothing like watching something you’ve poured your heart into take off.
It’s not just about
the success; it’s about the people you meet, the challenges you conquer, and the mark you leave. That journey is mine forever.
The Joy of Great Meals and Greater Connections
Food has a way of
anchoring experiences.
In Chile with
friends, I tasted the freshest empanadas, the kind that make you pause mid-bite to appreciate the flaky crust and spicy filling. We ate, laughed, and toasted to life under the Andean sky. That trip wasn’t just about the meals—it was about the stories swapped over them, the kind that turn friends into family.
But the greatest
connection I’ve found?
Coaching others.
There’s nothing like watching someone you’ve mentored have that “aha” moment—when the curtain pulls back, and they see what’s possible.
Over the years, I’ve
guided writers to greater success, not just in their craft but in their lives. I’ve seen their skills sharpen, their confidence bloom, and their dreams take flight. Those moments—when someone realizes they’re capable of more—are treasures I’ll always hold dear.
Why I Coach, and Why It Matters
Coaching has been one
of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s not just about teaching copywriting tricks (though I love crafting a hook that grabs you). It’s about helping people shed self-doubt, unlock their potential, and build lives they’re proud of. I’ve coached writers who’ve stayed with me for a month and others who’ve been with me for years.
Every one of them has
walked away richer—not just in technique but in vision.
I’m not sure how much
longer I’ll coach. Life shifts, and I want to savor every second while I’m in it. But for now, I’m inviting you to join me. My monthly mentoring program is a chance to see the copywriting world through my eyes, with one-on-one guidance tailored to you.
You’ll learn the same
strategies that took me to the top of my field—techniques that have worked for me and countless others. Whether you stay for a month or a year, you’ll gain tools to elevate your writing and your life.
The Wealth of Experiences
At the end of the
day, experiences are what define us. Paris as a carefree chaperone, England with my family, Brazil for jiu-jitsu glory, Chile with friends, Vegas for the fight,
Wisconsin for summer
freedom—these moments are the threads of my story. Investing in experiences means betting on yourself, on growth, on joy. It’s about collecting memories instead of things, connections instead of clutter.
So, book that trip.
Run that race. Say yes to the dream you’ve been delaying.
And if you’re a
writer ready to grow, consider joining me for a month of mentoring. Let’s create an experience together—one that could reshape how you see your craft and yourself.
What’s the next
experience you’re ready to invest in? I’d love to hear about it.
All good
wishes,
Doug
