The most important part of being a freelance writer is establishing great relationships.
The reason is simple: everything you get in life, you get from other people.
When you
understand this truth down to your soul, you will understand that the power behind your success is your network.
When you have a reputation for being good to work with and delivering more than requested—on time—you will automatically become their go-to person. They won't even look at other people because they know you deliver. The others are simply an unknown
risk.
Let me give you an example of how this has played out for me over 30 years.
When I started, I quickly realized that the marketing assistant would one day become the marketing coordinator... then marketing director... then VP, Senior VP, and then Chief Marketing Officer. One day.
You never knew when, but I knew.
That's why I always showed respect to everyone I met on the way up because I knew wherever they went, they would be in a position to hire me.
That has happened to me over and over again during
my career. There were so many people at Phillips Publishing/InvestorPlace I could point out who spent 10-15 years there that I worked with on a daily basis as they rose through the ranks.
There was one woman I met there who I worked with at five different companies:
- FSA,
- KCI Communications,
- TCI
Communications,
- InvestorPlace, and
- Eagle Financial Publishing.
Five companies over 30 years, and the one thing she would always say was, "We need to get Doug D'Anna." I would say that during that time we developed winner after winner after winner.
That relationship was worth millions of dollars to me in fees and royalties my career.
The moral of the story is the one I mentioned at the beginning: everything you get in life you get from other people, so get to know them. You never know where that will lead.
All good wishes,
Doug D'Anna
P.S. If you agree with me that everything you get in life is from other people, your next step is
clear.
