8 Time-Tested Copywriting Lessons You Can Apply Today
I've been blessed to have a great career as a freelance copywriter. The industry I worked in rewarded me with riches I could have never
imagined.
If you follow me, then you know I made my career selling subscriptions to investment newsletters as if I were the guru.
I started out with sales letters, package inserts, direct mail pieces, text emails, HTML emails, landing pages, and video sales letters.
I got into this
niche before there was an internet, before publishers could actually find people with the long copy skill set. Which was a huge advantage, since I could really name my own price when it came to selling my services.
They simply couldn't find anyone else who could actually do the job--and generate a ton of orders.
With each passing
promotion/email/video sales letter, I would put the knowledge to work on the next one.
Since I had a treasure trove of successes, I could beat most competition in head-to-head copywriting tests because I knew what worked, what didn't, and could use the hard-fought knowledge to increase my clients' revenues and mine.
If you can apply my 8 lessons, then you
could enjoy the same successes.
Lesson 1: Own the Copy: Earn residual income from your work.
I learned long ago that as a copywriter, I was really a songwriter. The only difference, instead of writing hit songs, I wrote hit ads. So instead of getting paid once, I got paid over and over and
over. Ka-ching.
Lesson 2: Work Smarter People: Gain marketing insights from those who know what sells.
They don't necessarily have to be better writers, but better marketers who can direct your copy. They can't write it, but they know what sells. Leverage their knowledge.
Lesson Three: Tell a Great Story: Engage and sell through storytelling.
We are all storytellers. No matter what you are selling, there is a story behind it. If you can tell a story that sells, you will be golden. Your readers won't just listen, they will buy as well.
Lesson Four: Study Your Craft: Learn from the best to become the best.
I would not have had the successes I had unless I had studied the copy of the top people in my field: Gary Bencivenga, Jim Rutz, Clayton Makepeace, Eugene Schwartz. I broke down what made their promotions successful and then used that knowledge to craft mine. You'll see that first hand in my swipe file.
Lesson Five: Believe in Yourself: Confidence translates into sales.
Believe in your copy. Have confidence in what you are
writing about. If you don't have confidence in your copy, it will come through to the reader.
Lesson Six: Research: Make your case compelling with facts.
Look. People don't buy if they don't believe. They don't believe if you don't make the case for what you are selling. If you haven't seen any of
my swipe file samples, be sure to dive in. Virtually every line in each promotion is a proof point. Do that and you'll see an exponential increase in your opens, clicks, and most importantly, orders.
Lesson Seven: Find a Good Mentor: Accelerate your learning with guidance.
In the beginning, I was a self-taught copywriter. I read the books and started to apply what I saw. But it wasn't until I came to Phillips Publishing under the wing of Richard Stanton-Jones that my copy
and skills took off. Working with Richard, I crafted the "Great Retirement Betrayal" -- over six months. That's right, back and forth, like writing a novel.
The result: it beat a strong Jim Rutz direct mail package by 100% and was their control for over three years, mailing 25 million copies.
These, my friends, are just 7 of the lessons I can
share with you today.
I always said I was not the best copywriter. There were others out there better than me. But while they were working in some corner office for $45K a year, I averaged over $250K for over 30 years, $400K for 20 of those years, $500K for 10 of those
years, with my best year coming in right under $700K.
None of which would have happened if I could not sell myself. I would have never gotten one opportunity.I don't know where you are in your copywriting journey, but if I were to advise you on the one most important lesson, it would be number 8. Sell yourself.
It is the one I used to build my million-dollar copywriting business.
