In my 30+ years of writing copy and selling myself, I learned the best way to cut through the noise is to do what other people are not doing.
So when others are zigging, I zag.
And it's rewarded me with the best
clients who always paid the most money.
If you're looking to get more business, then this email was written for you.
Today, I'm going to tell you about one of my secret weapons. It's an effective old-school technique that will leave your competition in the dust.
It's called "the lumpy package." You'll call it your secret
weapon too!
Let me explain..
Back in the 1980s, when there was NO email marketing, no websites, no internet...
...the only way to get to a potential client was with a telephone call and a sales letter. Back then, clients didn't answer their own phones. There was
always a secretary screening their calls and reading their letters. I got good at getting through to them. (But that's for another story.)
If you did send a letter, you never knew if they'd read your letter because, in some cases, it was impossible for you to follow up on your letter because the secretary was screening your calls.
That's when I
employed a brand new breakthrough technology that ALWAYS got me in the door.
What was it? FedEx. That's right. FED EX.
The reason was simple.
FedEx was brand new. AND it cost like $25 to send one. Which is like $70 today!
So when someone received a FedEx envelope or box, it was like WOW! It was like part mystery box and part Christmas present.
Back in the day, this type of direct response package actually had a name.
It was called the lumpy package. That's because
the package had a lump in it.
I used to send FedEx boxes and envelopes containing my samples and books directly to potential clients.
And let me tell you, they always got opened.
That's because everyone who
received them felt like it was a present waiting to be unwrapped.
And when they opened it, they found not just a letter, but a tangible representation of my skills and capabilities. I stood out because I had virtually no competition.
In a sea of resumes and pitches, my lumpy package was the only one on their desk.
Of course, if you've read this far you may be thinking, "Yo, Doug. We're living in the digital age. All the snail mail stuff is obsolete."
Here's the deal: the people you are trying to contact are flooded with emails, DMs, and AI-driven resume readers.
Your
message may never get to them, as they scroll through their emails hitting delete, delete, delete.
But a lumpy package? They're still going to open it like a kid opens a present on Christmas morning.
Think about it.
In a world where everyone
is glued to their screens (including you reading this message), getting a FedEx overnight stands out.
It shows that you're:
Thinking outside the box, and
Willing to go the extra mile to get noticed.
It adds a human touch which is what is lacking today in our digital AI-driven world.
Of course, what you put inside is also important to the sales process.
From a personalized note to a coffee cup, to some sort of swag shows that you're
not just another faceless email, but a real person reaching out in a creative way.
Sadly, 99 out of 100 people who read this message will never try this approach, saying to themselves, "this will never work."
PLEASE let them think that.
That's because when you employ this "Old School" technique you will have no competition.
That's because your competitors will be sitting at their desks crying that their emails and DMs are not getting opened--and doing nothing about it.
To be sure, the
"lumpy package" may seem old-school, but it's a strategy that's stood the test of time. And in today's digital world, where attention is the most valuable currency, standing out is more important than ever.
There is no better way that I can think to get someone's attention than getting a human being to ring your doorbell and hand you a lumpy package.
So if you are still reading at this point, I would say, "Give it a try."
You might just find yourself landing more business than ever before.
All good wishes,
Doug D'Anna
