The problem with frameworks and formulas is that they don't always work. They're a good start, to be sure, but the master key to higher-level copywriting lies
in the subtle art of selling between the lines.
You see, it's not about the framework you are following but the thoughts and emotions you trigger in your prospects' minds.
When I talk about selling between the lines, I’m referring to the elusive, almost magical effect your writing can have on a reader. If you’ve ever found yourself nodding your
head with an "aha" moment while reading a piece of copy, you’ve experienced this phenomenon.
If you want to reach the upper echelon of copywriting, your goal is to elicit that same head nod from your reader—to create an experience where they intuitively "get it" and feel compelled to keep reading.
### The Head Nod: The Subtle Art of Connection
I call it "the head nod." When your reader nods their head along with your copy, you have them. You have tapped into a deeper connection with your prospect than those who simply plug an idea into a framework.
That’s because your reader understands and resonates
with what you’re saying on a profound level. This connection is crucial because it ensures that your prospect not only reads your copy but also internalizes and acts upon it.
It all comes down to understanding your audience so deeply that your words seem to speak directly to their innermost thoughts and desires. When you master this, you’re not just communicating—you’re creating an experience that feels personal and
relevant to your reader.
### Developing the Sixth Sense for Copywriting
I don’t mention this to brag, but through years of practice, I’ve become exceptionally good at selling between the lines.
I think of this skill as having a sixth sense for copywriting. It’s an almost
mystical ability to intuitively know what will resonate with your audience, what will make them pause, think, and ultimately, take action.
Developing this sixth sense requires more than just technical skill. It demands empathy, a deep understanding of human psychology, and an ability to read between the lines of what your audience says and does. It’s about tuning into the subtle cues and signals that reveal their true
motivations and fears.
### How to Cultivate Your Own Sixth Sense
**Five Steps That Will Ensure Your Success**
1. **Listen Intently** If you don't know what your people want, how can you possibly deliver it to them? This is why you want to listen to their conversations, read their comments and reviews, and immerse yourself in their world. The more you understand their perspective, the better you can anticipate their needs and desires.
2. **Empathize Deeply**
I try to do this in every message I send you. I know what it's like to start from scratch in the copywriting business. I know what it's like to stare at a blank screen, not knowing what to write. I've found myself on the floor in a fetal position trying to figure out how to get more business. The more you can empathize with your prospects, the more your writing will resonate on a much deeper and personal level.
3. **Practice Observation**
This is a must. Study great copywriting. See how master copywriters create that head nod effect and then break it down. Use those techniques to connect with your people on a deeper level.
4. **Read Your Copy Out Loud to a Friend**
Pay attention to how they are receiving your message. I'll never forget reading my copy to my elderly babysitter as I wrote "The Great Retirement Betrayal." Whenever she would move her head or ask questions, I knew I had her.
5. **Trust Your Gut**
Sometimes, your intuition will guide you better than any formula or framework. I knew I was onto something as I was writing; there was a certain magic as I was pounding the keyboard. My internal intuition told me to keep going—you have something great here. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks in your writing.
The Bottom Line
The real power of copywriting lies not in the words themselves but in the emotions and thoughts they evoke in your reader. Selling between the lines has always been my advantage. Creating a connection that transcends the literal meaning of my words has been my stock in trade.
By developing a sixth sense for copywriting, you, too, can master the art of selling between the lines. This skill will elevate your copy and ensure that your message resonates deeply with your audience, creating that all-important head nod that signifies true connection and understanding.
