I was 26 years old at the time. I think it was 1981, the year after I graduated from San Diego State.
We were at my Uncle Jim’s little ranch up in Cameron Park. I was sitting there with my shirt off and he said, “You’re getting fat.” to which I replied, “I’m wishing it away.”
That’s when he said, “You can wish in one hand and spit in the other, and see which one fills up faster.”
I remember chuckling when he said that.
But later in the day I got a bee sting and by the next day the welt was as big as my fist.
I went to the doctor on the following Monday. He said, “Yes, that’s a bee sting; it will go away. But you are 202 pounds and you have to decide today if you are going to be 230 in three years.”
When I got home I changed into some sweatpants, grabbed my running shoes and went up and did three miles on the north end of Sawyer Camp Road in San Bruno.
I haven’t stopped exercising since. Running, judo, Jiu-jitsu… Treadmill, elliptical, Pilates machine, free weights in the garage. I even had a shed in the back yard of the old house with a weight machine in it and a TV.
My kids may not remember this, but I had a jogging stroller that I would take you on runs in. I called it, “The
freedom machine.” You would go on runs with me and my buddy Bob on Wednesday evenings.
That doctor, by the way, was my actually dad’s doctor. When I took my dad to the doctor one day I had the pleasure of telling him that story and thanking him.
And if the bee were around, I would thank him, too, as that was
the catalyst that moved me from couch potato to exercise fanatic.
As I reflect on the pivotal moment that propelled me toward a healthier and more fulfilling life, I'm reminded of the power of catalysts to ignite profound change.
