I was seven years old and I went out for pee wee baseball. This was a time when you tried out for one team—not the league where coaches would select you.
This was the era of "Everybody does not play." I'll never forget the coach rounding up a few of us at the end of the last tryout. He never said we didn't make the team.
What he did say was this, "Thank you for trying out. We hope to see you next year."
I still remember the
sting of rejection when I didn't make the team That was the very first setback I ever had. I cried all the way home. Suffice it to say the next year I made the team.
So what does all this have to do with copywriting?
Frankly, not everything works.
Not everyone will hire you.
Your
copy won't be all that great.
Take heart...
There are tons of people who never hired me, rejecting me and my work out of hand.
But I never let their problems hold me back!
I
just kept moving forward, refining my skills and finding potential clients that would hire me. They saw my potential.
Now I don't know where you are in your copywriting career, but if things are not going your way, get the cry out of your way and keep moving forward.
You can do this.
I am living proof.
I worked from home, typed letters for a living, got paid like an author, took my kids to and from school coached their sports, went to jiu-jitsu at lunch (and got a black belt!), had dinner ready when my wife got home from work, and made millions of dollars along the way.
I mention
this not to brag, but to simply say that if I can do this, you can do this too.
if you need a hand to hold on to, someone who can guide you through the ups and downs, my monthly mentoring could be right for you.
No matter what you decide,
please save this letter and re-read it often. Think of all the things that you have over come.
Copywriting is a great career. I know it can be great for you too.
All good wishes,
Doug D'Anna
