As I like to say, I’ve been writing copy before most of you were born.
As a result, I've witnessed the fascinating evolution of the industry, from crafting direct mail letters in the early days to creating magazine-style infomercials, emails, landing pages, and now Video Sales Letters (VSLs).
The Power of Data-Driven Copy
Throughout my journey, one constant has remained: the power of data-driven copy. Today, I'll share my experiences and insights into how this information has been the driving force behind my success, enabling me to consistently write winning direct response promotions over and over.
My Game-Changing Approach
Of course, when I started out, like most copywriters, I relied heavily on my creative instincts and persuasive writing skills. While these skills helped shape my efforts, the real game-changer for me came when I started
incorporating data into my copywriting process.
Which is why I always would say, "I’m not the best copywriter--I just know what to write about."
Even back in the direct mail days, I would use this to my advantage. So instead of taking educated guesses about what would sell to my audience, I would pore over prior results, market research reports, and take note of what I was seeing over and over in the mail. I would do the same thing with Magazine-Style Infomercials (or magalogs, as we would call them).
I would incorporate the same kind of tertiary research into writing captivating stories that moved readers to do a swan dive to the order page.
Digital Era Insights
As the digital era dawned, email marketing and
landing pages took center stage. I was able to tap into even more data. I could look at open rates, click-through rates, and conversion. The results gave me insights into what worked and what didn't—all of which would help me write my next winning promotions.
As VSLs gained prominence, I added video analytics to the mix, observing not only
when viewers dropped off but also which parts of the script resonated most and adjusted accordingly.
Over the years, while I may have been proud of my persuasive skills, the data was my secret sauce that made copywriting more profitable and effective. Here’s what I love the most about how technology has changed things.
You see, unlike the old days, I no longer have to wait for weeks to see how my promotions are performing. Real-time data gives me immediate feedback, allowing me to make on-the-fly adjustments to maximize results.
