Selling the Sizzle: Mastering the Art of Persuasive Marketing

There’s an old adage in advertising that if you want to succeed, you must "Sell the Sizzle and not the Steak."
I could not agree more.
In my 30+ years of copywriting, I am proud to say
that I have mastered the art of selling the sizzle.
If you take just a few moments to read today's post, you too can master the art of selling the sizzle and seeing your sales skyrocket.
Let's get started...
In my niche, the
sizzle was the secret stock that would make readers rich. But it was never the stock I was selling; it was the dream of wealth and riches.
Making people feel that, in fact, yes, they could live the dream, have the fancy car, the vacation condo in
Florida, the world cruise—whatever they desired.
In other words, I was selling the golden dream of wealth and riches.
The fact is, no matter what you are selling, you are also selling dreams-- and connecting the dots to your product that makes your readers' dreams come true.
I don't mention this to brag, but I got really good at it—selling over $100 million's worth of books and subscriptions to my audience who wanted to "live the dream."
That is why it is crucial that you learn to sell the sizzle, not the steak. It’s the old "features vs. benefits" argument. Sell the benefits, not the features.
But if you want to sell the sizzle, you MUST
make those benefits so appetizing, so delicious that your readers come running for them, like a dog to a cookie.
So how do you do it?
Just follow my 5-Point Sizzle Selling Formula
No. 1: Understand Your
Audience:
To successfully sell the sizzle, you must know what they will come running for.
You must delve deep into the desires, needs, and pain points of your target audience. I did this not only through market research but by looking at what my target audience was buying.
I used those aspirations and challenges to sell the dream of wealth and riches on an emotional level.
In my case, they all wanted to get RICH! So that was the sizzle that I sold them.
No. 2: Create a Compelling Story:
Make no mistake about it, human beings are wired for storytelling. You need only look at fiction books. People love to cuddle up with a book that paints pictures in their heads.
From that starting point, I would create compelling narratives that would build the dream that would connect the dots to what I was selling. Again, in my case, it was the dream of wealth and riches that could be acquired by the ownership of stocks.
All by using evocative language, captivating visuals, and relatable scenarios.
By doing so, I could engage my readers' imaginations and draw them into my story. Who wouldn't want to know about "$6 Canadian Oil Stock to Hit
$13 By Friday—Buy Now."
Focus on Benefits:
This is not the first place you will hear this—the sizzle lies in the benefits.
That's why I emphasize how my offering can make customers' lives easier, more enjoyable, or more successful. I clearly communicate the
positive outcomes they can expect by using my product or service.
EXAMPLE:
You could be driving a brand-spanking new Ferrari. If you invested just $5,000 in ALFACELL (ACEL.OB), you would have walked away with a whopping $276,944. Imagine how you would feel driving through your neighborhood, stopping to see friends, and smiling inside, knowing that you've finally made it.
Whether it's saving time, improving health and well-being, or boosting productivity, I emphasize the emotional rewards and improvements customers will experience.
No. 3: Harness the Power of Emotion:
Make no mistake about it, emotions play a significant role in decision-making. To sell the sizzle effectively, you must tap into your audience's
emotions.
You must use language that evokes excitement, joy, relief, or curiosity.
To do
this, you must connect to their aspirations and values and then connect the dots to their desire for status, belonging, or self-improvement. This lead from my Great Retirement Betrayal does just that.
EXAMPLE:
“I suspect that I'm a lot like you. My retirement is serious business. Every dime I invest is my future. So I don't take it lightly.
I've worked hard to get where I am. Just the thought of getting blind-sided gives me the chills. I don't need a bank failure, insurance company bankruptcy or risky investments messing up my retirement.
And I'm sure you feel the same.
Years ago I discovered I was being led down a dangerous path by the very same people who were
supposed to be safeguarding my retirement. What I wasn't being told had cost others their life savings, their pensions, and more!
But with what I know now, there's no way another Lincoln Savings, Executive Life or government bureaucrat is going
to pull the plug on my retirement!

No. 4: Use Social Proof:
Nobody buys unless they believe. As such, they are always looking to others for guidance when making purchasing decisions.
The best way to do that is to leverage social proof to enhance your marketing.
In my case, I do this two ways, with testimonials and profits that the reader has made investing by in stocks. This one-two punch not only builds trust but encourages prospective customers to take action.
RESULTS EXAMPLE:

impending crisis, our readers have profited by acquiring key resources along with the Chinese as the dollar has fallen and commodity prices have risen.

No. 5: Create a Sense of Urgency:
When it comes to selling anything, the time for your readers to buy is RIGHT NOW.
Which is why I always create a sense of urgency around my offering. I use every single trick in the book, including limited-time promotions, exclusive deals, or early-bird discounts to create a fear of missing out (FOMO).
I not only communicate
the value customers will gain by acting quickly but also the negative consequences of not taking action. By doing so, I move prospective customers to make a decision that results in action or faces the consequences of inaction.
EXAMPLE:
"If you wait until my buy rating becomes public in 24 hours and more Americans learn how this politically incorrect doubler will continue to richly reward investors in the face of economic
uncertainty, this $37 stock could have already hit $41 or $42.
Given the stock’s 12-year, 33% annualized gains, 26% rise since the first of the year, and rock-solid 5.9% dividend my estimate could be low.
Especially now that I’ve seen how many institutional investors and mutual fund managers at Vanguard, Franklin, State Street, BlackRock, and others, have piled into the stock to catch the next wave. Mark my words…
