Theory to Action: Harnessing Applied Learning in Copywriting
Published: Thu, 08/03/23
Hello again, friends,
As I mentioned in my last post, today I’m going to dive deep into the heart of what I believe is the key to successful copywriting: Applied Learning.
You might recall my mention of this concept in the previous post.
Today, I’m going to pull back the curtains and explore how you can
translate theoretical knowledge into practical, real-world applications.
As you will discover, once you adapt the principles of applied learning to your writing, your persuasive skills will rise to an even higher
level.
You see, it’s no longer about “knowing all the theories,” it’s about being able to apply what we know to real-world scenarios.
But first, what does 'Applied Learning' really mean?
At its core, applied learning is an educational approach that combines theory with practice. It's about taking what we've learned from books, courses, and lectures and applying that knowledge to actual situations.
In other words, it means using the principles of copywriting we've learned to create compelling, engaging, and effective content.
This is why I tell my coaching
students:
It’s one thing to watch hundreds of YouTube videos on jiu-jitsu, it's another thing to actually apply them in real time against an opponent.
In fact, it doesn't matter if you’ve spent weeks reading books on copywriting. So what that you technically “understand” the theoretical aspects of creating a compelling headline, a convincing narrative, and a strong call-to-action.
But can you put that into practice?
Here's where applied learning shines.
Imagine you're writing copy for an investment newsletter or trading service client.
You have learned all about your prospects, needs, desires, and pains.
You know they want to
make money.
You know they are afraid to lose money.
You know they want to be
rich.
You know they are looking for stocks that have opportunities to get rich.
Applied learning means that you apply this knowledge in real time to create engaging headlines like:
The Only Stock That Will Make You A Marijuana Millionaire
$6 Canadian Oil Stock to Hit $13 Buy Now
The $20 Backdoor Bitcoin Trade
The Fast Money 2020 Million-Dollar Giveaway
Boom or Bust
Ahead for Oil Stocks
That is what applied learning looks like, my friends.
I would then go on to tell the story of how readers would get rich, with a call to action that always created a “buy now” urgency or they would miss out.
The young guys call this FOMO - Fear of missing out.
And just like that, you've taken theory and turned it into actionable
copy.
Remember, the key to successful copywriting isn't about knowing all the theories in the world.
It's about understanding how to apply that theory to real-world situations to create compelling, persuasive copy.
This is where the true magic happens and where you, as a copywriter, can make a real impact.
In the following posts, we'll be exploring more about how to take these theories and apply them to your copywriting in more
detail, focusing on specific elements such as headlines, storytelling, and calls-to-action.
Stay tuned, and remember, the world of copywriting isn't just about writing; it's about understanding, adapting, and applying.
Until next time,
