You Have to Get Up Awfully Early To Beat Doug D’Anna
For more than 30 years, that has been my mindset. "You Have to Get Up Awfully Early To Beat Doug D’Anna."
You see, if I didn't adopt that mindset,I would have never beaten the control by 70% against top talent and made millions of dollars along the way.
The reason is simple:
When you are writing copy that is tested against others and the winner walks away with a bag of gold, you had better dig deep and put everything you
have into your project, or you are going to have a very short career.
That's because clients hire you not just to make them money but to make them more money than the other copywriter they have hired to test against you.
Win, and you are money.
Lose, and they may never hire you again.
Which is why I rushed down to my computer at 4:00 am in the morning to start working on my emails, direct mail packages, or video sales letters so I could throw everything I had into my project.
This brings me to what I want to talk about today: your mindset.
As a copywriter, your success is directly tied to your ability to win clients and control
packages. If you are not thinking like a winner, you have already lost the battle for customers and profits.
The fact is, if you don't believe in yourself, nobody else will.
This means believing in yourself, your skills, and your ability to succeed, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.
Please don't think I haven't faced setbacks. I have heard a whole lot of "No's" before I ever heard a "Yes."
But when I learned what to say to get to the
"Yes" faster, I was able to go from charging $1,500 to $10,000 for a direct mail package in a year.
Always charging the next client a little bit more because I would then show them more winning samples of my work.
That won me job after job after job. The more work I won, the easier it got. It just snowballed. With that confidence, I would then speak with authority, without being afraid of losing a job. I could get the potential client to salivate to hire me!
It was that same confidence that allowed me to double my price in day--going from $12,500 per package (and a 2.5 cent royalty) to $25,000 a package (and a 5 cent royalty). That was the greatest feeling in the whole world.
Here is the inside trick I learned.
When you are working at the level I was at, publishers are engaged in a battle to have the best copywriters working for them. No different than two music companies fighting it out for the best songwriters.
As a result, with that knowledge, I could DECIDE who I was going to give my million-dollar idea to. Which is why I could land the best projects and demand the highest fees and royalties.
Of course, none of this would have happened if I had not developed the copywriting skills that set me apart from the rest.
At the end of the day, the winning mindset will only take you so far.
You have to then adopt a "whatever it takes" mindset to study and hone not just your copywriting skills but also your selling and negotiation skills.
As I have always said, there were a million better copywriters than me, but they weren't better salespeople.
They were
either afraid to pick up the phone and call people or afraid to email or write to them, not knowing what to say, send, or close them on the phone.
Which is how I could win job after job. All of it began with the mindset "You have to get up awfully
early in the morning to beat Doug D’Anna."
This brings me to you and the challenge you may be facing today: keeping a positive mindset in the face of setbacks and obstacles.
As I discovered on my journey, keeping a winning mindset all came down to having a plan.
Without a real business plan for selling myself, I would get up in the morning asking myself, "What the hell do I do now?" I would then bounce from one thing to another, always unfocused.
That's when it hit
me.
If I can't sell myself, nobody will buy my services. I might as well think about getting another job.
So I adopted a realtor's approach. I would then FARM a niche for customers, just like a realtor. It was that kind of thinking that I used to build my business one client at a time.
I realized that my job wasn't to win a client on each call but to begin a relationship. I'm proud to say that my relationships in the business have lasted more than 30 years.
In fact, I have one client that I have worked with at five different companies. As she moved from opportunity to opportunity, she would take me with her.
So let me ask you a few questions:
What are you doing to build relationships in your business?
Do you have a plan to attack each day?
As I regularly tell my coaching students, if you want the business, you have to go get it. It is not coming to you.
If you don't have a plan, you will bounce around like a pinball, bouncing from one thing to another instead of moving like a straight line toward the finish line.
This is why I created my "How to Sell Yourself as a Copywriter Program."
To give copywriters a proven/winning formula for
winning jobs and opportunities.
I can tell you it's a winning formula because it is the same one I created for myself that took me from $0 income in 1989 to averaging $250,000 a year for 30 years, $400,000 a year for 20 years, and
$500,000 a year for 10 years—with my best year coming in at $700,000.
I created it nearly 15 years ago when a young copywriter asked me how I created my business and career.
That's when I started writing down virtually everything I did, from figuring out the niche to write to how to pitch clients. It all came down to who to call, what to say, what to send, and how to follow up. I built my whole program around that.
It was precisely that knowledge that helped me build my copywriting business from scratch. I don't know where you are in your copywriting career, but if you are looking for a proven plan to get new business, I would like to offer you a copy of mine.
It's guaranteed to bring you three clients in 90 days or your money back. That is how confident I am that it will work for you--when you work the program.
You don't have to take my word. You can test-drive my approach and see for yourself.
No matter what you decide, I
hope that my message today will help you develop the mindset that "You Have to Get Up Awfully Early To Beat YOU."
All good wishes,
Doug D'Anna
