Struggling to build your copywriting business? Here are seven simple things you can do now
Make no mistake about it.
Building a successful copywriting business is not an easy task. It requires
hard work, dedication, and a clear strategy. I can tell you that first-hand. It took me seven years to climb the ladder of success, going from my first $500 sales letter to my first of dozens of $25,000 direct mail packages.
Don’t think it was easy. It was a grind.
Along the way, there were times when I felt lost and unsure of what to do next--sitting, staring at a blank screen, either not knowing what to write or whom to contact to find work. As I discovered on my journey, it’s a normal feeling that all entrepreneurs experience at some
point.
If you are feeling lost building your copywriting business, here are seven things
you can do right now to get back on track:
Revisit
your why:
When you
started your copywriting business, you had a reason for doing so. Maybe you wanted to work from home, have more freedom, or earn more money like me. Whatever the reason was, it's important to revisit it. Remind yourself of why you started this business in the first place. This can help you rekindle your passion and motivate you to keep going.
Review your goals:
Take a look at the goals you set for yourself and your business. Are they still relevant? Do they need to be updated or adjusted? I wanted to make $1 million a year. In some ways, it was a reach, but averaging
$400K a year for two decades and making $700K in my best year, I knew I was doing ok. By reviewing and updating your goals, you, too, can get a better sense of direction and purpose as I did.
Connect with your network:
Networking is a critical part of building a successful business. Reach out to your network of colleagues, mentors, and clients. Ask for advice, feedback, or just a friendly chat.
Before the internet, I would find out who some of the other copywriters were, and we could connect and talk about clients! This was great for finding jobs, raising prices, and finding who paid their bills on
time.
Learn something
new:
As a copywriter,
it's important to keep learning and growing. Take a course, read a book, or attend a webinar. Learning something new can give you fresh ideas and inspiration to move forward. Here's the link to check out few of my courses.
Change your
mindset:
When you're feeling lost, it can be easy to get into a negative mindset. Instead, try to focus on the positive and look for opportunities. Take a break, meditate, or do something you enjoy to shift your perspective.
Please don't think I never hit a dry spot. I did.
The year was 2005. All my clients got laid off and their business' were struggling. But I dug deep,
re-thought my business plan, and started soliciting new clients.
Find a mentor or coach:
Having someone in your corner who understands the journey and can help take you by the hand to overcome the obstacles you may be facing is invaluable. Someone who offers you valuable insights, helps overcome obstacles, provides accountability, and is a source of motivation and inspiration. If you are feeling lost or unsure of what to do next, my transformational program may be just what you are looking for.
Take action:
Finally, the most important thing you can do when you feel lost is to take action. Even if it's a small step, doing something can help you gain
momentum and build confidence. Write a blog post, send a cold email, or create a new marketing plan. Whatever it is, take action and keep moving forward.
When you add everything up, feeling lost while building your copywriting business is a normal part of the journey.
However, with a clear plan and the right mindset, you can overcome the challenges and achieve success. Remember, building a successful business takes time, patience, and perseverance. Keep going, and you will get there.
You have my word.
