My Miracle "Fishes and Loaves Strategy
For Closing More Clients
If you attended Catholic school, then you probably have heard of "the fishes and loaves."
It's an old parable that Jesus used five loaves and two fish supplied by a boy to feed over 5,000 people.
I have used that same "miracle' to close a multitude of clients over the years.
But I never used real fishes and loaves. I used my copywriting samples. My samples were my fishes and loaves.
You see, for every big control I would write, I would send that winner out to dozens of potential clients as samples of my winning work.
Those "samplers" would almost always
results in a phone conversation that would then result in a copywriting project.
In other words, I could turn one win into multiple wins.
I did this over and over and over during my 38 year career.
In the beginning, I would send them a sample of my mega-hit winner, The Great Retirement Betrayal," but also a copy of a great news article that had been written about me.
They beauty of that article was the dual testimonial of the author of the article and the quote from my publisher/mentor at the time, "I want to make Doug D'Anna richer than his wildest dreams so that nobody will be able to touch his talent."
That was gold. In a
way, that testimonial was like fishes and loaves too. Multiplying its power ever time I sent it out.
REASON: Because the clients could see how I sold myself and how I would then apply that knowledge to their products. The fact that I had written and sold my own books added a ton of credibility that I could lend to my name.
As technology has evolved, my "fishes and loaves" evolved from sending PDFs to complete video breakdowns of my promotions. That way clients could not only understand my thinking but also get an idea of the kind of thinking I would bring to their project.
As you begin your copywriting journey, please consider your copywriting samples a part of your own "fishes and loaves" strategy.
Fact is, potential clients want to see what you have done for other people so they will get an idea of what you can
do for them.
Frankly, that is how I sold myself as copywriter.
Sending samples was only one step in
the process. Getting a potential client on the phone was step two. Not only do they want to know what you've done, they want to know who you are.
You see, people like to do business with people they like and trust. There is no better way to build trust than with a REAL LIVE
conversation.
That's what I teach in myHow to Sell Yourself as a Copywritercourse, including: Who to call, what to say, what to send, and how to follow up so you get the job instead of turning clients off.
And that sums up my fishes and loaves strategy.
You simply leverage your winners into more winners.
And it's so simple! If you are willing to send at a few samples and make a few calls, the miracle of fishes and loaves will work for
you!
All good wishes,
