I didn’t go to college to be an copywriter/entrepreneur. That
was the furthest thing from my mind.
But when I graduated, I couldn’t find a job. After sending out hundreds of resumes, I tried a different approach.
I cold called
this restaurant to pitch them my advertising services, services I learned as the college concert producer's assistant.
I used a script that I memorized from speech class. I not only closed the appointment but won the job. Two days later. I did the same thing. I closed a second job with another company--all by positioning
myself as a consultant, not a job seeker.
I found it was way easier to close a client than it was to close an employer for a job. 1000 times easier. I would call them, send them samples of my work, and then get them back on the phone to close the appointment.
In time, my clients started to look like a who’s who of local businesses: Citibank, Computer Age, Pacific Bell, Fireman’s Fund Insurance, First Savings Deposit Bank, Industrial Indemnity, Mateo High Fi, Peninsula Clock Shop, Sequoia Ski Shop, Southern Pacific Railroad, Sunset Magazine, and the granddaddy of them all--Visa.
Honestly, it was like taking candy from a baby.
It got even easier as I expanded from retail advertising to direct mail/direct response copywriting and used my computer to mass direct mail and email
big-name clients and even got them to call me!
When I niched down into the financial copywriting business, it was even easier. I knew exactly what they were looking for and positioned myself as “the rainmaker.”
And I had the track record to prove it.
In 1991 I went from charging $1500 for a direct mail package to $10,000--ultimately raising my price to $25,000 a package PLUS a royalty of 5 cents per direct mail piece and 10% of all online sales.
Today, my client list reads like a who’s who of publishers.
